About the Artist:
José Luis Cuevas is a Mexican artist who worked primarily with etchings, illustrations, sculptures, and paintings, though he is perhaps best known for his drawings. According to Cuevas, “perhaps because I was born in a paper mill and pencil factory, paper has always had a great fascination for me.” He briefly attended the eminent Mexican institution Escuela de Pintura, however Cuevas considers himself a self-taught draughtsman in search of an alternative to the Mexican Muralists and their social messages. For Cuevas, his drawings represent the isolation of man and an inability to communicate, many of his drawings featuring distorted human figures and figures transformed into animals. His work was inspired by the graphic styles of Francisco de Goya, Pablo Picasso, and José Guadalupe Posada, as well as the works of the Catalan Romanesque, 19th-century Romanticism and German Expressionism.

José Luis Cuevas
José Luis Cuevas was a Mexican painter, draftsman, writer, engraver, sculptor and illustrator. Although the biography on his personal site indicates the date of 1934, his older brother, the doctor and psychoanalyst Alberto Cuevas Novelo, has assured that he was actually born in the year 1931. He was known as the "terrible boy" of painting in Mexico, and also had the nickname of Gato Macho. From his first exhibition in Washington in 1954, when he was only 20 years old and from the Washington Post and Time Magazine, he learned to exploit his public image as a macho, seducer of women, and an artist without hair on the tongue. An extraordinary sense of vanity and narcissism led him to photograph himself day after day since 1955. He challenged the Mexican mural movement that dominated at that time and was a prominent member of the Rupture Generation. He was a self-taught artist, with many very marked styles and influences on the dark side of his life, and he frequently distorted figures and generated debates. He was a very controversial character, not only for artistic reasons, but also for his controversies with other writers and artists. In 1992, the José Luis Cuevas Museum was inaugurated, which houses many of his works and his personal art collection in the Historic Center of Mexico City.

William Scharf (born 1927, Media, PA) is an American artist from New York, he teaches at The Art Students League of New York. Painting with acrylics, he was a member of the New York School movement. Often categorized as a late generation Abstract Expressionist, Known for producing paintings with abstract compositions incorporating biomorphic and geometric forms in vivid colors, the artist was influenced by Surrealism, the Color Field painters, and symbolism. He apprenticed with Mark Rothko and was influenced by his color field paintings. The surrealist painter Arshile Gorky and the Abstract expressionism style found in 1950s New York City also influenced Scharf. His exhibits include San Francisco Art Institute (1969), the Pepperdine University's Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (2001), and Richard York Gallery in New York City (2004). In the heyday of Abstract Expressionism, being serious meant following the tenets of the New York School, which required abstract paintings to be spontaneous improvisations, the messier the better. At once hedonistic and disciplined, his brazen paintings are nothing if not promiscuous. The best ones mix the dynamism of gestural abstraction with sensual rhythms of decorative patterning, sometimes souping up the stew with cartoonish symbols and flourishes so ripe they belong in a dandy's fantasies. His exhibits include San Francisco Art Institute (1969), the Pepperdine University's Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (2001) and Richard York Gallery in New York City (2004). Scharf's work has been exhibited in a number of galleries, including the Anita Shapolsky Gallery, Meredith Ward Fine Art, and Hollis Taggart Galleries in New York City. Scharf has been an instructor of art at various institutions including The Art Students League, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the School of Visual Arts in New York. He is a member of the Society of Illustrators and the Artists Equity Association.
